DESCRIPTION | Highest quality, large and impressive pair of vintage English loaded sterling silver candlesticks with gadroon edge decoration, removable sconces, traditional pitch loading
and correctly hallmarked to both sconce and base. The removable sconce is a useful feature as it simplifies the removal of spent candle stubs and protects the socket. Gadroon decoration first appears on the
socket rim, shoulder and base rim of candlesticks in 1695 when the designers realised the twinkling charm of candlelight on the patterned surface of gadrooning.
The silver body wall thickness of this type of candlestick varies, I have found some Birmingham made pieces to be rather thin, but in this case we can see the silver thickness from the base rim and it is impressively thick. |
