DESCRIPTION |
Rare pair of Georgian silver Newcastle made sugar tongs with bright cut engraved decoration and monogram engraved bow. The Newcastle assay office ledger 9th January 1778 to 26th June 1795 show that assays for Langlands and
Robinson included "tongs, sparrowgrass t., spring t., sugar t., tea t.". The account books of Ralph Beilby & Thomas Bewick show that they were employed by Langlands and Robinson to engrave such items (amongst many others) and were paid between
£36:6:0 and £131:1:4 annually to do so. |
