DESCRIPTION | Superb antique English Victorian solid sterling silver gilt vesta box with engine turned decoration, discreet monogram engraved cartouche, fully gilded interior and steel strike within a separate compartment. Beautiful hinge action and original gilded interior. The chemicals in the early vestas (matches) attacked the metal surfaces, even the gold so the wonderful condition of this hinge and the gilded surfaces indicates that this box has seen little or no vesta action. I think the steel strike is given a dedicated compartment to avoid accidental ignition and to keep your hands and pockets clean following a strike. |
