DESCRIPTION | Superb antique English Georgian sterling silver rope twist swing handled pierced pedestal sugar basket with a smiling sun crest and blue glass liner. The liner is a modern bespoke hand-made replacement. |
SILVERSMITH | Burrage Davenport, a specialist maker of pierced baskets who was apprenticed to Samuel Herbert, a specialist maker of pierced baskets who was apprenticed to the great Edward Aldridge. Can you guess what Edward specialised in? Correct pierced work. Silly fact that amuses me; Edward was in partnership with John Stamper during the 1750s and 1760s and just a few decades later the introduction of the mechanical stamping out of 'pierced' patterns initiated the demise of hand-piercing for all but the finest work. |
DATE or HALLMARK | 1774, thoughtfully the assayer, having hit the maker's mark on his first attempt, struck a second, clear mark. Marks from this 1756-76 series can be difficult to read if not well-struck. |

CONDITION | excellent, beautiful piercing, good hinge action, no wear, no repairs, thick metal, little downwards bump to the top rim at one handle hinge that I think best left alone. Odd internal reflections to the underside of the pedestal base around the hallmarks in the last image give the appearance of damage/repair when actually this area is perfect, exactly as it should be. |
