DESCRIPTION | Magnificent pair of antique English Georgian rococo solid sterling silver sauce boats with the original armorial engraving. Quintessential mid-18th century design with all the features that you would expect for rococo of this period. So beautiful that I need say no more, just drink in the images. The armorial is exactly right for 1749 and is of the type that contains much information about the original owner and their family histories. A delicious rainy day project awaits someone with an interest in such things and I expect important names to be unveiled in the ancestry. |
SILVERSMITH | John Barbe, a Huguenot. The bases are slightly curved where the hallmarks are struck so, showing great respect for his work, he has carefully struck his relatively large punch giving emphasis to the J on one boat and the B on the other, thereby producing one complete mark between the pair without resorting to an excessive strike that could have deformed the body. |
