DESCRIPTION | Very good antique English Georgian solid sterling silver tea pot stand with bands of thread, bead and engraved decoration and a central laurel leaf cartouche that has never been engraved or erased. The underside I have left patinated and nicely displaying the original assayer's scrape. There are some later dealers' scratch markings that could easily be removed but not without harming the patination so I have left them in situ. Also there is a strange ellipse of very lightly engraved dashes that have no connection to the engravings on the top. Best guess here is that these are from a later mechanical engraving tool that was absent-mindedly played over the underside for no reason. Could be easily removed but, again, not without removing the patination. Quite interesting fact; these stands were made to hold the newly fashioned flat-bottomed and legless oval tea pots and protect your polished mahogany table. The tea pots were made for a couple of years before the someone thought to make the first stand. |
