DESCRIPTION | Exceptionally good antique English Georgian solid sterling silver Hanoverian pattern table spoon with central rib, proud single drop and pronounced upturn to the terminal and with nicely struck hallmarks and the original chicken crest engraving verso. This spoon was made to be laid bowl down at table but years of laying it the 'wrong' way up has allowed the table tops to rub the base of the crest engraving. It was the fashion to lay bowl down partly to keep the bowl clean but mainly to show off the hallmarks and your crest to make sure all knew how wealthy and important you were. |
SILVERSMITH | Philip Roker II, beautifully struck and preserved mark |
DATE or HALLMARK | 1746, mark struck lightly to the narrowest part of the stem but we know this is 'l' for 1746 and not 's' for 1753 because the serif top left can still be clearly seen |
