DESCRIPTION | Very good antique English Georgian pierced solid sterling silver 'large type bottle/decanter coaster' with a green felt lined ebony base. The cartouche is engraved 'CC' and the beautifully clear hallmarks have been struck to the two unpierced panels. Nice sign of quality and planning to leave the two unpierced areas to receive the hallmarks as so often important marks are lost within the piercing. This item began life as a Georgian cruet stand with central silver carrying handle and probably four glass bottles. Over time bottles get broken and the silver handle breaks due to the heavy load when all bottles/jars are full. This is an intelligent and functional re-purposing much in tune with today's ethos. Impossible to be certain when the conversion was done as all that was needed was to unscrew the three bracket feet and plug the hole where the handle went but I would guess this item has spent half its life as a cruet stand and half as a large coaster. |
