Superb set of six Old English pattern teaspoons with bright cut engraved decoration and original initials by a relatively well known maker. Bright cutting was introduced by silversmiths in an attempt to counteract the loss of business that they were suffering to the new Sheffield plate manufacturers. It was a laborious and so expensive decoration that the ever resourceful platers soon found a way of representing in plated metal and so the fashion was short lived. It is also one of the styles that does not wear well. Once the facets rub and wear just slightly, most of the effect is lost. This set of six teaspoons is quite extraordinary in that they are as good as the day that they were made and offer a probably unique opportunity to see bright cutting just as the silversmith originally intended. |
