DESCRIPTION | Very good pair of antique English Georgian cast solid sterling silver sugar tongs with a nice moon & star crest engraving to the bow. Correctly hallmarked with just the lion passant and maker's. This type is the transition from cast silver sugar nips to the ubiquitous one piece sprung bow type. Not a successful design with the three cast sections prone to fracture and snapping. Repairs should be expected. You may like to compare with M1533, a pair that I sold many years ago that William made in partnership with his brother Thomas around 1765. The partnership was on and off throughout much of the 1760s. Also this very similar pair by William sold more recently m7967. |
