DESCRIPTION | Good pair of sturdy antique English Georgian cast solid sterling silver sugar nips with very good bulbous 5-lobe grips and with engravings to the box hinge. The H over I.S is the original engraving and most likely a marriage gift to Mr. I & Mrs. S with the surname H.... The cursive script with serifs initial engraving to the other side of the box hinge is in a slightly later style and so could be for one of the children. |
SILVERSMITH | Thomas & William Chawner (brothers) |
DATE or HALLMARK | 1764, no date letter as is usual for these items but we can be very sure of this date to just a year or so either way due to style of item and hallmarks |
ASSAY OFFICE | London |
WEIGHT in GRAMS | 40 |
LENGTH | 4 ¾", 122mm |
SILVER STANDARD | ·925 sterling silver |
CONDITION | good but cast silver like this is brittle and will break. I can see one excellently executed repair within a 'C' scroll to one shaft and lower quality work to the solder joints between the box hinge and one arm and one shaft. Box hinge appears to have been hit with a large hammer as the surface is no longer perfectly flat. Box hinges wear resulting in floppy action. The action of this pair is good. The hammer blow is a legitimate and effective, although rather crude, method of correcting hinge play. |
