DESCRIPTION | Pair of antique English Georgian solid sterling silver sugar nips or tea tongs in astonishingly good original condition. Round finger rings, plain arms and shafts, sweet little box hinge and the rare chevron scallop grips. Stylistically more 1720s than 1730s except for the little round hinge that brings us into the 1730s. I have seen and handled thousands of Georgian sugar nips and concluded long ago that we must accept wear, damage and/or repairs due to their fragile design and construction using brittle cast silver. Here I am proved wrong. I can find no damage or repairs, the hinge action is still excellent and the hinge box has never been engraved or erased. This pair is just as Francis made them back in the early 1730s. Take a moment, enjoy looking at them, for you will never see their like again. |
