DESCRIPTION Solid cast silver gilt sugar nips with an unusual bull's eye box hinge and a crest and motto engraving to one of the spoon shaped grips. Motto 'UNE FOY MESME' if for the Gilpin family and translates to 'one and the same faith'. The grips indicate a very early date, probably 1720s but the rest of the nips do not. Casting is finest quality, strong and heavy with just one flaw to one finger ring and does not 'feel' 18th century English. The shape of the shafts and pronounced bull's eye hinge pin I have never seen before.
SILVERSMITH not marked
DATE or HALLMARK probably 18th century, certainly old but I cannot go further
ASSAY OFFICE no marks, probably not English (or at least not London) I suspect French but cannot justify this.
LENGTH 4 ", 122mm
CONDITION good, some hinge play, flaw to one finger ring, rubbing to the gilding
