CONDITION | excellent. When I found this pot it was black and difficult to see what the true condition was so I have had it professionally cleaned and polished throughout. It is now fit for food (drink) use and is rather bright and shiny but this will settle down with time and use. There are no engravings or erasures and so none of the associated thin spots which is rare on objects of this type and age. A feature of the manufacture is a thin greyish layer over the surface of the metal that has been given the unpleasant names of fire skin or fire stain. The colour is actually copper atoms and if you would like to know more about the chemistry just ask me. When new the grey would cover the entire surface so would not be noticed. Rubbing and polishing over the years removes the grey layer in places but this is all hidden by the milky surface of used silver. You might be able to see the grey patches in my images, my photographic set up tends to accentuate them after a recent professional polish. They will settle back down as the surface becomes milky again with time and normal use. Also, under more ordinary domestic lighting they are less noticeable. |
