INDEX | ALL SILVER |
DESCRIPTION | Georgian solid sterling silver cream or milk jug with bands of decorative engraving, strongly gilded interior and original assayer's scrape to the base. You would be forgiven for thinking this is one of the rarest pieces of English silver, a Peter and Jonathan Bateman jug from 1790. The clipped top 'p' date letter looks exactly 1790 but I think it is actually 1810 that has been clipped by the engraving. The makers' mark is partly rubbed. Both 'B's clear, upper left 'P' just discernible, important lower left letter only showing upper right serif and downward stroke. If this stroke is vertical then it must be 'I' for Jonathan. I think I can see a slight angle on it so I am opting for 'W' for William. |
