DESCRIPTION | Very good antique English Georgian solid sterling silver salver on three hoof feet and with the original initials engraving discreetly situated verso. B over R M so Mr. R. B. marries Mrs. M. B. Quite possibly this was a wedding gift. It is extremely unusual to find the upper surface unadorned with no engraving or erasure, the silver is still pleasingly thick. The underside is deeply patinated and between the two feet below the engraving can still be seen the original assay scrape. The hallmarks are beautifully struck and well preserved and the odd little circle and rectangle are where old stickers were attached. Little salvers/waiters such as this are sometimes called 'card waiters/salvers'. They would sit in your hallway near the front door for your servant to place the calling cards of visitors on so that you knew who had visited that day if you had been out or simply not in the mood for guests. |
