DESCRIPTION | Scarce antique Georgian solid sterling silver Bright-cut Edge Irish pointed Old English Star pattern cream ladle with a long rat tail to the bowl and blank cartouche. |
SILVERSMITH | William Cummins, also 1819-25 mark for retailer William Law & Son |
DATE or HALLMARK | 1821 curiously marked with 1822 duty mark. Jackson notes a similarly marked egg spoon of 1821 also by William Cummins. There is a story here, my guess is that William Cummins submitted a parcel of silver for assay shortly before the day of the May annual date letter change. The new duty mark was ready, George IV had become King 29th January 1820, so they used it but kept to the tradition of using the new date letter only from 29th May of the year. |
