Superb set of six Georgian silver Hanoverian pattern with double drop table spoons, crested verso with a dolphin embowed. This crest has been used by many families, please see my last image. |
SILVERSMITH |
5 marked by Caleb Hill overstriking that another another (probably Thomas Mann) and one marked for Thomas Mann. Caleb Hill was apprenticed to Thomas Mann from 1721 and gained his freedom in 1728. All these spoons are identical in style, proportions and weight and so it is most likely that he made these spoons just before gaining his freedom and then overstruck the Thomas Mann mark when he received his own. Why he left out the sixth spoon is a mystery but perhaps he did not like the way that the overstriking came out, it is a little messy as both marks are so similar. |
