DESCRIPTION | Astonishingly scarce set of nine (actually 6+3) antique English Georgian solid sterling silver Hanoverian with Rat-Tail pattern teaspoons. The six have no engraving nor any sign of an erasure but I do not believe that they have never been engraved so I think it fair to say very well executed erasure verso even though there is no visible evidence to support this. The three have a wonderfully naive 'S' engraved verso that is likely to be original. |
SILVERSMITH | The three are clearly marked for Henry Greene, active 1700-1734 and this is his sterling mark registered in 1720. The six have a very distinctive maker's mark and a lion passant guardant from the 1756 onwards series. Between the six spoons we have clear view of the entire punch with distinctive outline, cursive letters and unconforming and probably unique pellet following the initial of the surname. The pellet should be between the letters and not at the end. Should be an easy maker to identify yet I have drawn a blank so I conclude that this mark is from the now lost smallworkers register of summer 1739 to summer 1758. |
DATE or HALLMARK | The three Henry Greenes 1720-1734. The six most likely summer 1756 to summer 1758. Just after this date Old English pattern came into fashion and the Hanoverian waned, especially the older style such as these with rat tail and frontal central rib. This could explain the exceptionally good condition of the six. |
