DESCRIPTION | Astonishingly scarce set of four English Georgian solid sterling silver Hanoverian pattern teaspoons with long
bowls, long drops and crest engraving verso. I say 'verso' now but at the time spoons and forks were laid with their bowls or tines downwards so that
you could show off the hallmarks.
From this period and in excellent condition plenty of table spoons can still be found, fewer dessert spoons and almost no teaspoons. They wore out or were accidentally discarded. We lost a whole set of Bateman teaspoons during the period our children ate yogurts regularly. They were just mistakenly thrown out with the pots and wipes etc. I have left them as I found them, complete with tea stain and other patination but a polish could be included free of charge if you would like that. |
SILVERSMITH | Ebenezer Coker, fourth mark with shaped punch and pellet, some pinching and it clearly did not fit onto these small stems with only cursive 'E·' mostly ever extant. |
DATE or HALLMARK | no date letter, it was not required on such small items at the time, but punch of lion passant guardant sterling mark from 1755, this mark of Coker succeeded by partnership mark in 1759 so these spoons must be 1755-59 |
