DESCRIPTION | Very good antique Georgian Irish solid sterling silver Fiddle with Rat Tail pattern basting/gravy/serving spoon with the original frontal monogram engraving and nice hallmarks verso. |
SILVERSMITH | William Cummins and also marked by retailer NEIL.
Robert Neill's firm started circa 1803 and closed circa 1960. They traded from 23/25 High Street, 6 Donegall Place, Belfast and are known to have stocked pieces by Cummins. I have a later example of NEILL's mark here; SOLD £220 silfren eleven Irish Victorian silver Fiddle with Rat Tail pattern teaspoons John Smyth and retailed by James Neill Dublin 1853 www.silfren.com Note that the later mark has the two Ls at the end. Punch makers charged by the letter. The early punch would have been relatively expensive and needed replacing often so I wonder if, to save money, they only used the one L at the beginning and splashed out later on the double L when they had greater wealth or when the sons joined the business. Equally it could simply be the general illiteracy of the period and the precise spelling of your name was optional. |
